Skunks and Snakes
Aug. 13th, 2004 04:20 pmThursday morning I was lollygagging in bed here in the country. There's something about being in my own bed that's so luxurious. I don't have Bob or the dogs and I can spread out like a flag.
The night before, Bob had set out a huge animal trap to snag the raccoon that has been tearing up the lawn. This is the second lawn we've had to put in this year and the rodents keep getting to it. I told Bob that it would be easier if we just planted dichondra (which most of them hate) and put in a flagstone path down the middle and extend the flower beds so the buggers could munch somewhere else. I think that fell to deaf ears.
Anyways, I was talking on the phone with my friend Steve when Bob popped into my room looking flustered - he had trapped a skunk in the garden by mistake and it sprayed. Naturally the dogs had gotten near it so I found myself disconnecting Steve and calling the vet for the recipe on how to get skunk smell out, Bob placing the dogs in quarantine and dashing into the car to the drug store for the ingredients.
The smell was incredible. It took 4 washings but the dogs finally got clean.
Bob is now in agreement with me that we have to ditch the lawn.
This afternoon I came home to find our yard crew cleaning up. One of the guys was bashing a shovel on something - turns out it was a Rattlesnake. Apparently the second one this week - the first one Bob ran over with his car.
I know, I know - yuck.
Busy weekend ahead and hopefully the weather will stay nice. Can't make Hairisson but I'm sure everyone will have a bear of a good time.
